Who Are We?

We are informed by our past, focused on the present and oriented toward the future. Though we have a long and rich past, we’re not nearly so interested in our history as we are interested in HIStory.

The year was 1884. Georgia was 152 years old. Cobb County was 50 years old. Chester Arthur was completing his first term as president of the United States. Grover Cleveland and James Blaine were engaged in a hot political campaign to determine who would become the new president.

Meanwhile, there was a remote, rural community located about half way between Atlanta and Marietta. It was called Smyrna. A small group of rugged, faithful people got together and decided, “There needs to be a church in Smyrna.” And so First Baptist Church was organized.

The long-established church is different. It has to continually reinvent itself and renew its commitment to its mission. This we’ve done. And continue to do. We’ve changed a great deal over the years. The metro area in general and our community in particular have also greatly changed. Yet, in the face of all that’s changed, what hasn’t changed is our message. The gospel of Christ is as clear, as simple, and as fresh today as it was in the first century.

We’re a multi-generational church. We have a great mixture of young, old, and all ages in-between. We’re in love with the Savior and in love with our community. If you love this community like we do, then why not come and help us make it a better place!
